You may be aware that existing NZ Domain Names like .co.nz and .org.nz have become optional and any person or business can now get the shorter .nz domain names.

This means there's now lots more choice in NZ Domain Names. You can now grab a shortened .NZ domain even if your first choice .co.nz has been taken. And even if you've already secured your .co.nz domain name, we recommend that you also secure the .nz version to boost your businesses visibility and for the protection of your brand.

NZ Domain Names

.nz

  • The short .NZ domain name is simple to use and easy to remember. Released in 2014 and amongst the other NZ domain extensions it is the newest. The chances that you can still register your favourite domain name are therefore comparatively high.
  

.co.nz

  • With nearly 480,000 domain names currently registered, .co.nz is by far the most popular .nz domain extension. This domain is usually seen as an official domain for NZ businesses and as a result is usually the first preference in domain selection.
 

.net.nz

  • A great name for New Zealand based groups and networks, although anyone can register this domain. Again many people who have a related .nz domains choose to register a .net.nz also.
  

.org.nz

    • Especially catered to suit NZ organisations such as clubs, charities and non-profits. Many companies and individuals with related domains also register their .org.nz both for brand protection.
 

.kiwi.nz

  • .Kiwi.nz is one of New Zealand’s newest web addresses that best describe New Zealand. Sell to New Zealand with a .kiwi.nz.
  

.geek.nz

  • For technical enthusiasts, .geek.nz domains are unrestricted and may be registered by any local or foreign individual or company.
 

.gen.nz

  • The term .gen is the abbreviation for "general." The .gen.nz domain name extension is available as an alternative to .co.nz and others.
  

.ac.nz

  • This domain is the official extension for university and tertiary institutions around the country. The "ac" stands for "academia."
 

.school.nz

  • Similar to .ac.nz, .school.nz caters for educational institutions. Although any institution can register .ac.nz, it was introduced to open up choice and opportunities for smaller educational organisations.
  

.maori.nz

  • .Maori.nz is especially catered for Maori individual, groups and organisations. Maori.nz is not moderated, anyone can apply for a .maori.nz domain.

 

 

Registration Rules of Domains:

General Rules 

  • Domain names cannot contain spaces

  • Domain names are not case sensitive. For example, can be used as Infosystems.co.nz or InfoSystems.co.nz

  • Use only letters, numbers, or the hyphen ("-") character

  • They cannot begin or end with a hyphen

  • Registered on a first come, first served basis

 

.nz Domains (New Zealand)

 

  • Must have at least 2 characters
  • No registration conditions except for the 5 moderated extensions, which are .cri.nz, .govt.nz, .iwi.nz, .mil.nz and .parliament.nz
  • Length cannot exceed 63 characters in total (not including extension)
  • Registration term from 1 year minimum to 10 years maximum
.com, .net, .org, .biz and .info Domains (International/General)
  • No special registration conditions, ie. anyone can register
  • Length cannot exceed 63 characters in total (not including extension)
  • Must have at least 2 characters
  • Registration term from 1 year minimum to 10 years maximum
.co.uk and .org.uk Domains (United Kingdom)
  • 2 year minimum and maximum registration period
  • .co.uk is intended to be used for commercial purposes and .org.uk for not-for-profit or public service enterprises
  • Must have at least 3 characters and less than 65 characters, including .uk
  • Can only be renewed during the 6 months prior to the expiry date, ie. after 18 months of registration
.com.au and .net.au Domains (Australia)

 

  • Restricted to Australian companies, foreign companies licensed to trade in Australia, and holders of an Australian Registered Trade Mark
  • Domain name must exactly match, be an acronym or abbreviation of the registrant’s company or trading name, organisation or association name or trademark; or be otherwise closely and substantially connected to the registrant
  • 2 year minimum and maximum registration period
  • Can only be renewed during the 90 days before expiry, ie. after 21 months of registration
.mobi Domains (International/General)

 

  • For use with websites designed for mobile phone usage
  • The use of .mobi domain names is regulated by the dotMobi Registry - websites using a .mobi domain name must conform to mandatory rules, and compliance is tested
  • Must have at least 3 characters and less than 63 characters, not including .mobi
  • Registration term from 1 year minimum to 10 years maximum
.tv Domains (Tuvalu, but branded as Television)

 

  • Used for commercial and personal sites
  • Registered on a first come, first served basis
  • Must have less than 63 characters, not including .tv
  • Registration term from 1 year minimum to 10 years maximum
.ws Domains (Western Samoa, but branded as Website)

 

  • To be used for commercial and personal sites
  • Must have at least four and as many as 63 characters, not including the .ws
  • Registration term from 1 year minimum to 10 years maximum
.cc Domain Names (Cocos or Keeling Islands)

 

  • To be used for commercial and personal sites
  • Cannot contain all numbers
  • Must have at least 3 characters, but less than 47, not including .cc
  • Registration term from 1 year minimum to 10 years maximum
.us Domains (United States)

 

  • To be used by U.S. citizens and residents, U.S. corporations and other U.S. organisations and organisations with a presence within the United States
  • Domain names must be longer than 2 characters and cannot exceed 63 characters (this does not include the extension)
  • Registration term from 1 year minimum to 10 years maximum
.jp Domains (Japan)

 

  • To be used for commercial and personal sites
  • Must have at least 3 characters, but less than 63, not including .jp
  • 1 year minimum and maximum registration period
